Pembroke Manor

Pembroke Manor

Built in 1764 , Pembroke Manor is listed on both the Virginia Landmarks Register and the National Register of Historic Places. Pembroke Manor was formerly owned by the PAC/VBHS before being sold to private ownership.

The builder of the Georgian style home was Jonathan Saunder who was married to Elizabeth Thoroughgood. On January 21, 1765 he died, willing the house to his son, Captain John Saunders.  In 1779 Captain Saunders was called before the Princess Anne County Safety Committee and declared a British subject and his property was taken away.  The Saunders Estate was resold in 1781 by Thomas Jefferson, Governor of Virginia.
